Source and Spread of the Virus
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, and now with this new virus (named SARS-CoV-2).
The SARS-CoV-2 virus is a betacoronavirus, like MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. All three of these viruses have their origins in bats. The sequences from U.S. patients are similar to the one that China initially posted, suggesting a likely single, recent emergence of this virus from an animal reservoir.
Kratom and Other Tropical Plants Have Corona Resistant Compounds
However, with all the bad news traveling around regarding this deadly virus, there is a ray of hope that our community should reflect on.
According to a news release in The Pontianak Post yesterday, “the diversity of tropical plants in West Kalimantan have a lot of compounds that can strengthen the immune system and ward off corona virus,” said Dr. Thamrin Usman, professor of chemistry at Tanjungpura University in the interview.
"Our biodiversity is very superior. To increase the body's immune power, usually with Vitamin C which gives a warm effect such as ginger and other spices. Whereas to ward off Corona one can use virgin coconut oil. This material has been proven to boost the body's immune system,” he said in the Pontianak Post article.
In addition, he said, it was reported from researchers in Wuhan that Chloroquine (Cq) can be used for the treatment of patients with Covid 19. The Cq molecule is present kratom leaves, which grows in areas such as Thailand and Indonesia.
"By looking at the chemical structure of Chloroquine molecules that contain secondary and tertiary amine compound structures, it can be considered to use kratom leaves. Because Mitragynine compounds in kratom are actually secondary and tertiary amines," Usman said.
